Possible capture system

A possible solution for DE2 acquisition in HD is the Go Pro HD Hero. The built-in 127 degree FOV, 1080p/30fps or 720p/60fps capture seems like a good fit and the price is right: $259. Downsides are no viewfinder or timecode, but this may be the most economical solution for a 4-stream capture solution that is waterproof and lightweight enough to mount on a helmet.

  1. No viewfinder is not a problem cause we're shooting 360.
This sounds pretty awesome. Indestructable, weatherproof, wideangle. Goodness.
No timecode? wierd, have to double check that.
Still - your not going to get frame accurate timecode anyway across 4 cameras.
With the old DE camera we used the film technique of something visible in the field.
We covered the whole camera with a hat. Started em running - then lifted the hat off - so you could sync it manually later.

But the benefit of the go pro is that its cheap. You could make a few of them. Other people could make them. IE if we designed a simple attachment harness - then we could provide/sell that and people could buy their own cams off of the shelf.

I had been thinking along the lines of a ladybug camera from point grey which already shoots 360 degree and stitches it all for you. But its very pricey. Sponsorship??
Also heavier and needs more power.
BUt the benefit is that the content is stitched and ready to go!

There can be more then one camera system. :)

  2. As I mentioned earlier, I think the wide angle version of the GoPro is 170 degrees... would this be an improvement or hinderance? If you could get away with just two cameras and then two projectors on curved screens then this would be a nice and lower cost solution. Anyone have any idea if this is feasible or how well or poorly it would work?
